BITNET: CCAT @ PENNDRLS The materials on the accompanying diskettes are distributed by the Center for Computer Analysis of Texts (CCAT) at the University of Pennsylvania for the use of students, teachers and scholars in study and education contexts. They are not to be used, either directly or indirectly, for commercial purposes without prior written consent of the various legal authors and developers identified below. If copies are made and given to other persons for NON COMMERCIAL use, those persons are also required to register with CCAT by completing the standard "User Agrement" (included in the file ORDER.txt on this diskette) and returning it to CCAT at the address indicated above. This is for legal and collaborative purposes only; no fees are involved. The CCAT repository contains a wide variety of materials obtained from various sources. The following are standard items for which requests are regularly received. It is expected that, in accord with normal scholarly etiquette, use of such materials in publications, etc., will be acknowledged appropriately. BHS = Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, ed. K. Elliger and W. Rudolph (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1967/77). Copyright held by the German Bible Society, in cooperation with the United Bible Societies (UBS). Michigan-Claremont BHS = The computer text produced initially under the direction of H. Van Dyke Parunak (then at Univ. Michigan) and Richard E. Whitaker (representing the Claremont Grad. Schools), with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Subsequent revisions and verification have been coordinated by Whitaker with input from a variety of sources and special support from the CATSS (Computer Assisted Tools for Septuagint Studies) Project and its teams at the Hebrew University (Jerusalem; under E. Tov) and at the Westminster Theological Seminary (Elkins Park, PA; under A. Groves) as well as at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). An early form of the Michigan-Claremont text provided the basis for the MIKRAH version, which in turn was further improved through cooperation with the Bar Ilan (Israel) computer center and the Maredsous (Belgium) based Centre: Informatique et Bible (CIB) directed by R. F. Poswick. The Michigan-Claremont text also has been collated against the CIB text. LXX = Septuaginta, ed. A. Rahlfs (Stuttgart: Wuerttembergische Bibelanstalt, 1935; repr. in 9th ed., 1971). CATSS LXX = The computer form prepared by the TLG (Thesaurus Linguae Graecae) Project directed by T. Brunner at the University of California, Irvine, with further verification and adaptation (in process) by CATSS towards conformity with the individual Goettingen editions that have appeared since 1935. GNT = The Greek New Testament, 2nd ed., ed. K. Aland, M. Black, C. M. Martini, B. M. Metzger, and A. Wikgren (Stuttgart: Wuerttemberg Bible Society, 1968). Copyright is held by the United Bible Societies (UBS). The computer form was prepared by TLG. PAR = Parallel Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek texts of Jewish Scripture, based on the Michigan-Claremont BHS consonantal text and the TLG LXX, created by the CATSS project under the direction of E. Tov (Jerusalem team). This data base currently is in a provisional form that will undergo continued modification as the CATSS project proceeds to its goals. Portions of PAR can be supplied by special arrangement. LXXM = The morphologically analyzed text of CATSS LXX prepared by CATSS under the direction of R. Kraft (Philadelphia team). BHSM = In the near future, the morphologically analyzed Michigan-Claremont BHS materials will also be released. GNTM = The morphologically analyzed United Bible Societies NT3 will also be released. LXXV = The CATSS LXX plus the textual variants as encoded from the apparatuses of the best available editions (especially Goettingen, Cambridge), and reformatted for computer by the Philadelphia team of CATSS under the direction of R. Kraft. Only small portions of this data base are currently available. The "CONVERT.exe" program The Convert program uses a more familiar citation system than the TLG/CCAT system. It will make a new copy of a text-file that uses TLG/CCAT formatting (implicit locators like ~x with automatic incrementation of chapter and verse). The new file will have explicit locators (book, chapter, and verse at the beginning of each line) to facilitate searching, indexing, etc. for users without appropriate special software. We recommend that you save the new form to your hard disk or to another diskette and keep the original BHS material intact. For more information, consult the text-file, Convert.Doc. Pascal source code for this program is available from CCAT. Ask for the "Programmers Toolbox" diskette. The "LEX.exe" program This program allows you to do simple searching of our texts without first converting them with the convert program. Parallel and morphologically analyzed texts in compressed format are expanded automatically for displaying finds. You may specify whether to output the greek in lower case or keep it in BETA standard upper case. You may also ask for Hebrew to be reversed before display. You should enter your search criteria, separated by CR (ENTER) and press when you are ready to go on. Remember to enter Greek and Hebrew in upper case and to include accents and vowels. Future search programs from CCAT will not insist on this inconvience. You may provide input and output file names as parameters on the command line, e.g.: LXX obad.par results.txt or the program will prompt you for them. Pressing CR at the output file prompt will sent the results to the screen only. If the screen fills, the program waits for you to press a key before going on. C source code for this program is available from CCAT. Ask for the "Programmers Toolbox" diskette. The "CONCORD.exe" program This program is a concording and indexing program. It will allow you to produce word lists, frequency lists, indices and concordances on CCAT files. Where multiple works exist in a single file, CONCORD will allow you to specify a sub-file (work) for processing. See the file CONCORD.doc for more information and instructions for use. Pascal source code for this program is available from CCAT. Ask for the "Programmers Toolbox" diskette. The "COLLATE.exe" program This program allows you to compare files on a line by line basis and puts the results of the comparison in a list file (in addition to displaying them on the screen). More detailed information may be found in the file "COLLATE.hlp". The "SPLITFIL.exe" program This program allows you to split long beta code files into shorter ones at ~x (usually chapter) divisions. Specify the source file, two destination files and the maximum size (in bytes) of the first destination file: SPLITFIL source destination1 destination2 targetSize The first destination file will be as close as possible to the target size as is allowed by the ~x divisions. The second destination file will contain the remainder of the file, with a full citation in the first line. Split file does not work as well with files whose largest normal division is higher than ~x. The "REVERSE.com" program This program performs a rudimentary line by line reversal of the text for the purposes of viewing Hebrew in left to right format. It is not sophisticated, however, and if cantillation is still in the text, it will reverse the numbers as well. Presumably you would not be using REVERSE if you had a program capable of displaying cantilation anyway. Cantilation, etc., can be stripped using the CONVBHS program. The "CONVBHS.com" program This program removes characters you may not need from the CCAT BHS text files. At the option of the user, the program will remove cantillation, vowels, prefix and suffix dividers, daghesh and raphe, end of line, end of verse markers, and editorial notes. For more information about these characters, consult the manuals provided with the CCAT BHS files. For more information, consult the text-file, ConvBHS.Doc. The "CDR2BETA.exe" program This program allows you to convert files in Hi-Beta format as they are found on the TLG and PHI CD-ROMs into Low-Beta format as distributed on floppy diskettes by CCAT. Most CCAT progams expect the low format texts. LIST.com is a "shareware" program for browsing text files distributed by permission of the author. *.doc these files are the documentation for the program files whose file names they share *.key files used by concord for sorting lists in the languages specified.
