INFORMATION ON THE PHI/CCAT "Demonstration" CD-ROM (#1) and Catalogue of Texts Available Separately from CCAT (March 1988 Release) Center for Computer Analysis of Texts (CCAT) Box 36 College Hall University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia 19104-6303 215 898-5827 (Robert Kraft) Background and Orientation: The initial CCAT CD-ROM is being produced in cooperation with the Packard Humanities Institute (PHI) as a companion disk to the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) CD-ROM "C". Both these laser disks will run on the IBYCUS Scholarly Computer with its Sony CD-ROM Reader and system software. With added support from the Packard Foundation, CCAT has also developed software to access these CD-ROMs from IBM/DOS microcomputers. Pricing and Orders: The PHI/CCAT CD-ROM is being offered by subscription for $25 through PHI (300 Second Street, Los Altos, CA 94022). A properly signed license agreement must be submitted to PHI before delivery can be made. The agreement is for a very short term, in anticipation of the issuing of updated material on CD-ROM from PHI (Latin texts) and CCAT in the near future -- realistically, this probably means Fall 1988 at earliest. The CCAT software is intended for use on any IBM/DOS PC system with a CD-ROM Reader and Controller that supports the "High Sierra" format, and is being made available (including source code) with the understanding that it is still under development and is not considered a finished product. The software will permit the user to locate, access and copy materials from the CD-ROM, and to search the materials for occurrences of syllables, words, phrases, etc., in various combinations. The initial release will display the ASCII transliterations used on the CD-ROM, but later releases will include the option of screen display in the appropriate fonts for systems with any standard graphics card and at least 256K RAM. The software is compatible with the PENN GRAPHICS LANGUAGE TOOLBOX (GLT), for further manipulation in the appropriate character fonts (for more information contact CCAT). The CCAT CD-ROM software will cost individuals $75, prepaid (make checks payable to Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania). An Institutional License permitting copies to be made for all students, faculty and staff is available for $400. Individuals may request one free software update during the first year from the date of purchase; other updates will be provided for a nominal fee. Holders of Institutional Licenses will receive all significant software updates free during the first year. All users are encouraged to assist in refining the software for maximum utility, with all non-CCAT developments remaining under the non-exclusive control of CCAT for further adaptation and distribution. C O N T E N T S * Items prefixed with * can be obtained separately from CCAT. On some other items, special arrangements may be possible. NOTE: FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEXTS (e.g. HEBREW AND GREEK) ARE IN ASCII TRANSLITERATION AND WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY APPEAR IN NON ENGLISH FONT FORM ON SCREEN/PRINTER WITHOUT SPECIAL SOFTWARE. 1.
