Center for Computer Analysis of Texts (CCAT) Box 36 College Hall University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA. 19104-6303 215/898-1597/5827/4917 BITNET: CCAT @ PennDRLS 11/14/89 EXTERNAL SERVICES This fact sheet presents information on the following services provided by the Center for Computer Analysis of Texts (CCAT) at the University of Pennsylvania: 1. Data available through CCAT on diskette, and tape; 2. Scanning services; 3. Software and Foreign Language Fonts; 4. Consultation; 5. Sources for further information from CCAT. Many commonly asked questions are addressed below. For further information contact David Rech (215/898-1597), or Alan Humm (215/898-1597), Dr. Robert Kraft (215/898-5827) or Dr. John Abercrombie (215/898-4917). Each may be reached through BitNet at CCAT @ PennDRLS. Requests for general information should be addressed to CCAT @ PennDRLS. 1. DATA AVAILABLE In what computer formats are texts available? On 9 track tape (600 ft., 1200 ft., 2400ft.): 1600 b.p.i., record length 100 block size 4000, ASCII or EBCDIC On floppy disk: MS DOS (IBM PC) diskettes (5 1/4 inch and 3 1/2 inch) Macintosh Ibycus SC On CD ROM (in cooperation with the Packard Humanities Institute): NOTE: Other major archives exist from which materials can be ordered at reasonable cost -- e.g. TLG for Ancient Greek, PHI for Ancient Latin (both on CD-ROM), and the Oxford Archive for a wide variety of texts (on tape). CCAT works in cooperation with these centers, and also provides selected material on diskettes. What "public domain" texts can be obtained from CCAT, how soon, and at what cost? As a rule of thumb, the minimal charge is $25.00, plus $2.00 per diskette and from $10.00-$15.00 for 600-2400 ft. of tape. Since material can be loaded onto a tape more efficiently, the cost of a full 2400 ft. tape is normally only $40.00. A catalogue of available materials is appended. Copies of the catalogue will be made available on request. NOTE: Foreign language texts (e.g. Hebrew and Greek) are in transliteration (ASCII) and will not automatically appear in non- English font form on screen or printer without special software. We provide three Greek fonts and one Hebrew font for Macintosh CCAT files in the respective languages. Are there shipping charges or other additional costs? A surcharge of 10% (20% for overseas orders) for shipping and processing is expected. Are there any conditions placed on use of CCAT material? Yes. A copy of the appended "User Agreement" form must be signed by the requesting party before the order will be filled. Among other things the recipient agrees to make "fair use" of the materials (not to exploit them for commercial or quasi-commercial purposes) and to notify CCAT of errors and/or improvements. How can I order materials? Complete both of the attached Order FORM and User Agreement, and return them to CCAT with your payment. Advance payment is necessary for efficient "at cost" operation. Add an additional surcharge of 10% for purchase orders. Will other texts be made available in the future? Materials are regularly added as they are completed or become available for non-commercial distribution. Copies of the catalogue will be made available on request. What is the CCAT CD-ROM? CCAT is involved in producing texts on CD-ROM (compact disk). The first of these (in cooperation with the Packard Humanities Institute [=PHI]) was released in March 1988, containing biblical texts, Classical Latin texts and a sampling of other materials. For information about receiving the CD-ROM contact the Packard Humanities Institute directly: PHI, 300 Second Street, Los Altos, CA 94022. What hardware is needed for the PHI/CCAT CD-ROM? The CD-ROM will run on the IBYCUS Scholarly Computer with its Sony CD-ROM Reader and system software. CCAT has also developed software for an IBM PC, entitled OFFLOAD, which is made available (compiled and with source code) with the understanding that it is still under development and is not considered a finished product. In addition, several products are available commercially for accessing the CD-ROM from Macintoshes and IBM-PC compatables. You may contact CCAT for further information. 2. SCANNING SERVICES What is optical scanning? A Kurzweil data entry machine (KDEM) is used by CCAT staff for transferring texts from printed or typed form into electronic form much faster than if a text were typed in at a computer terminal. We have scanned thousands of pages of Coptic, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Russian (Cyrillic), Spanish and Yiddish material for colleagues at Penn and at other institutions. How much does it cost? The cost of optical scanning is not completely predictable and depends on a number of factors such as the quality of the text to be scanned, the complexity of the character set, and the need for subsequent editing of the material. Generally we will try to keep the cost at under $50.00 per training set (teaching the KDEM to recognize your characters) plus $1 per average sized page (around 3000 characters = 500 words) for unverified ("raw") output. Additional special services for automatic verification, editing and the like are also available at costs not to exceed $25.00 per hour (usually $12.50 and $15 per hour). How do I go about having a text scanned? If you are interested in exploring use of the scanning facilities, please send excellent quality photo copied samples of the material representing its different fonts, formats, etc. (about 5 pages in total). Also send information on the text itself, title of the work, number of pages, etc. Give us two weeks to estimate a cost and then contact the CCAT offices for the price quote. For further information contact David Rech (215/898-1597). BITNET: CCAT @ PennDRLS. If you decide to proceed with the job, we require a deposit of 50% of the estimated cost before scanning can begin. 3. SOFTWARE Are any CCAT programs available for general use? The book entitled _Computer Programs for Literary Analysis_ by John Abercrombie contains more than a dozen computer programs written in BASIC, PASCAL, and IBYX for collation, indexing, parsing, analzying manuscript families and other forms of manipulation of texts. It is used as a textbook at the University of Pennsylvania to train students to use computers for textual research. It is also valuable as a resource tool and self-help reference for learning humanities programming. How do I purchase _Computer Programs for Literary Analysis_? _Computer Programs for Literary Analysis_ may be purchased for $14.95 from the University of Pennsylvania Press by check or VISA: University of Penn Press, 1304 Blockley Hall, Philadelphia, PA 19104. The programs in the book are also available from the Press on diskette in MBASIC and TURBO PASCAL for the IBM PC, in PASCAL/VS for IBM mainframes, and for KayPro CP/M, for $26.00 per diskette. Are there any special programs for using biblical and other "TLG Beta format" files from IBM/DOS or Apple MAC machines? There are two CCAT Text Utilities diskettes, one for MS-DOS computers and one for the Apple Macintosh. Each contains important information about the coding used on CCAT material and a copy of this document. In addition, each contains various programs produced by Center staff designed to facilitate textual research, and use of CCAT texts in particular. These include programs for basic boolean searching, concording, and conversion of Beta format texts such that they have full "chapter" and "verse" notation at the beginning of each line. The Macintosh disk also includes several foreign language fonts and a program for transcribing texts in one coding system to another. Similar programs for MS-DOS computers are currently under development. The Text Utilities disk is included with every text order, but you may also order it separately from CCAT, Text Distributors for $15.00 (specify MAC or PC). Are there other programs available? CCAT is also pleased to announce the availability of the source code for most CCAT programs and utilities. The CCAT Programmers Toolbox diskette can be purchased for the IBM PC or Apple Mac (see order form). In addition to many of the subroutines from _Computer Programs for Literary Analysis_, the diskette contains C and Turbo Pascal versions of a number of programs used by the Center staff in their daily work. Programmers working with Beta format texts in particular are strongly encouraged to obtain this disk. NOTE that the Toolbox is supplemental to, rather than an alternative to the Text Utilities disk. In particular, it lacks much of the user documentation (in favor of source code documentation). Other CCAT software, mostly for language instruction, can be purchased from WiscWare, a distribution branch of IBM Corp. for academic software. Contact WiscWare directly for their catalogue: 800/543-3201 or 608/262-8167. What software support is available for IBYCUS SC users? There is an IBYCUS users group on the BITNET electronic network, and CCAT is a participating member. Various utilities programs have been prepared and are available to IBYCUS users. Contact CCAT for further details. 4. CONSULTATION Can CCAT staff be hired for on-site consulting? CCAT staff members are available for consultation at fee levels ranging from $250.00 per day + travel expenses to $400.00 per day + travel expenses, depending of the level of expertise required. Telephone consultation may also be negotiated. Do CCAT staff members write programs or prepare data for external users? Yes. For specially written computer programs or other services requiring staff time and for which no extra travel is required, the cost is between $12 and $25 per hour (minimum charge $25). 5. SOURCES FOR INFORMATION FROM CCAT What are the ONLINE NOTES? CCAT's electronic Newsletter, The ONLINE NOTES, is edited by John Abercrombie and contains useful information on computing for textual research contributed by the various users, whose electronic addresses are also included in ONLINE. It is available monthly over BITNET, an international electronic network which reaches many academic institutions. Some of the topics covered in the NOTES are: reviews of software and hardware, reports on projects, information on low cost software, general information on other Centers for Computing. How much does it cost to receive the ONLINE NOTES? There is currently no cost for receiving the ONLINE NOTES electronically. Printed copies of the accumulated ONLINE NOTES from the most recent year cost $25.00 (available in August). Previous annual issues are available for $25.00 each. To order, send the attached form to CCAT, Text Distributors at the address above. How do I subscribe? Send an electronic request to JACKA @ PENNDRLS and you will begin receiving the Notes if we are able to reach your computer over the Networks. May I duplicate the ONLINE NOTES for colleagues? Yes. CCAT has no objections to a subscriber duplicating part or all of the NOTES for non-commercial purposes. Is similar information regularly available to persons not on BitNet? You can keep in touch with new developments of interest to textual and religious studies with Robert Kraft's bimonthly OFFLINE column that appears in the Religious Studies Newsletter (Scholars Press, PO Box 1608, Decatur, GA 30031-1608) and in the Bulletin of the Council of Societies for the Study of Religion (also available on the HUMANIST BITNET Fileserver).
